STATEMENT: NEMA Applauds Introduction of Legislation to Protect Access to Codes

June 13, 2025

Electrical codes and standards

NEMA Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Spencer Pederson issued the following statement in response to the introduction of the Pro Codes Act (H.R. 4072):

“NEMA applauds the introduction of this important legislation that supports and preserves public access to critical safety standards. As a Standards Development Organization (SDO) with a 100-year legacy, NEMA is laser focused on leading the development of consensus-based and science-backed standards that protect public safety, benefit communities, and drive economic growth.”

“The Protecting and Enhancing Public Access to Codes Act (Pro Codes Act), H.R. 4072, will help preserve the current public-private partnership model through which federal, state, and local governments depend on privately developed codes and standards to protect public health and safety and regulate industry at no cost to the taxpayer. NEMA thanks Rep. Issa (R-CA) and Rep. Ross (D-NC) for their leadership on this issue and looks forward to working with lawmakers in a bipartisan fashion to advance this legislation and ensure these protections support the development of the next generation of codes and standards.”
